The Royal Malta Golf Club supports the only golf course on the Maltese Islands. The Club was founded in 1888 when it was accorded Royal status – one of only 66 Royal Clubs worldwide. It moved to its current site from Valletta in 1904 and was extended to provide 18 holes in the 1950s.
It is a private members’ club with some 500 members including an active Junior Academy.
The course offers 18 holes of golf in stunning, historical, landscaped grounds, with beautifully maintained grounds. Today at par 68, the course is a good challenge for the more experienced, without being unkind to the novice.
The apparent simplicity of the course is deceptive as it is narrow demanding accuracy off the tee and controlled approach shots as the greens are small and well bunkered. Depending on the season, there is not much water on the course but a few strategically placed water hazards lie in wait.
The fairways and greens are fully irrigated providing a green oasis and offering a short but challenging test for members and visitors alike throughout the year. A new modern Clubhouse was inaugurated by the President of Malta in 2013. This includes excellent changing facilities, a Conference Room, Members Lounge, Restaurant and Bars with great views over the Course.
The local professional manages a Golf Shop in the clubhouse, providing equipment for sale and hire as well as booking tee times and greeting visitors at the Reception Desk. He provides a coaching service to members, mainly on the separate Driving Range; and encourages members to meet and participate in an extensive programme of competitions.
