Squash at Marsa

The Marsa Sports Club Squash Section boasts 5 squash courts with glass backs, of dimensions and width markings as specified by the World Squash Federation, and with a spectator area that can seat up to 90 persons. 4 of the courts are fully air-conditioned.

The vast majority of the section members participate in a Squash Section League, which runs throughout the year. The league is made up of a number of divisions, each having 5 to 6 players competing over 7 rounds. At the end of each round the 2 players with the highest number of points gain promotion while the 2 with least points are relegated to the next lower division.

The Marsa Sports Club hosts the prestigious annual Malta Squash Open which is usually held in Spring. This week-long tournament, has established itself as the local showcase of talent which is at par with foreign competition. The Malta Squash Open is sub-divided into three categories, as the Men's Open, Ladies' Open, and the Junior tournament. All draws have 1st round loser plate draws.

The Summer Team Tournament which runs from June till August, with the facilities of air-conditioned courts, aims to get players together actively during the hot summer months, in a competitive team spirit whilst keeping the social atmosphere high as the participants like to meet up at the club's bar for a much needed drink after matches. The end-of-Summer Season is usually celebrated with the annual BBQ event. The evening is characterised by good food, fun as well as Award Presentations to players, highlighting talent bearing consistency, improvement and performance. Trophies and other prizes are given out whilst a special thanks goes to the sponsors, for their role in keeping the section alive.

Besides the ongoing yearly league and summer tournament, the Marsa Squash Club also hosts a number of tournaments amongst which one can find the Marsa Squash Open, the Doubles tournament, and the Works Team tournament. These tournaments are organised by the Marsa Squash Section in collaboration with the resident Club Coach and the Malta Squash Association.

The Marsa Squash Section provides players at all levels, with the opportunity of improving their skills and techniques with a number of training sessions delivered by the Resident Coach Paul Lake. For those young children who would like to start practising squash from an early age, there are the Junior Squash Coaching sessions held every Sunday morning. This is gradually getting more popular with each passing year as some Juniors have in fact already been giving some brilliant results which have made Malta proud locally and at offshore tournaments.

Two Squash training camps are organised each year whereby those members wishing to travel and play squash competitively against foreign contestants, are given an opportunity to do so. In addition, for those members who cannot join in the training camps organised abroad, a number of Squash training camps are also organised locally by the Marsa Sports Club. Foreign clubs are invited to join and participate at these local training camps.
